Urinary Tract Infections: A Common Health Problem | Stéphanie Hinse, Naturopath

Urinary tract infections are conditions that bring their share of confusion, frustration, and complications into everyone's life, but particularly that of women. They are recognized by a burning sensation when urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, and an odor as well as a cloudy appearance to the urine. The majority of these infections are due to a bacterial imbalance (caused by E. coli).

Where to start to lower your risk of infection?

Cranberry has been used for its beneficial properties on the urinary system for several centuries. Indigenous peoples and Europeans alike had understood that the extract of this plant had an effect on the symptoms of urinary tract infections. Its bioactive compounds, in particular the proanthocyanidins (PACs) present in cranberry-derived products, have the ability to inhibit the adhesion of bacteria to the walls of the urinary tract. This aspect is therefore essential to prevent colonization in your urinary tract and thus minimize the risk of infection.

A Cochrane systematic review (1) analyzed 50 studies involving 8,857 participants and concluded that cranberry-based products reduce the risk of urinary tract infection in certain populations, notably women with recurrent urinary tract infections, children, and people who have undergone certain medical procedures. The power of such a small berry can therefore greatly impact the quality of life of these people, who often have few options other than antibiotic treatments that can destabilize the bacterial flora as a whole (both good and bad).

In addition to its benefits for urinary tract health, cranberry is a superfood with many virtues for cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and cognitive health. Its protective effect rests on its richness in antioxidants and bioactive compounds. However, to enjoy its benefits, it is preferable to consume concentrated extracts.

Immunia's cranberry extracts are recognized for their multiple health benefits, well beyond their role in the prevention of urinary tract infections.

Fruitomed's Immunia Urinary Health product combines a concentrated cranberry extract with an extract of Canadian elderberries. This unique combination draws on the complementary properties of these two small fruits:

  • Cranberry: prevents the adhesion of bacteria to the walls of the urinary tract.
  • Elderberry: has anti-inflammatory properties that promote the recovery of irritated urinary tracts.

This powerful duo rests on a high concentration of polyphenols, molecules with antioxidant effects that help neutralize free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress and cellular aging. These compounds also act as prebiotics, contributing to the balance of the gut microbiota. (2)

I recommend that all my clients use Immunia's cold-pressed cranberry and elderberry extracts at the very first symptom of urinary discomfort. The juices found in supermarkets contain significant amounts of sugar that substantially unbalance the flora when taken daily.

If you suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections, consult a health professional, make sure you stay properly hydrated, opt for cotton underwear and avoid clothing that is too tight, urinate frequently, and maintain good intimate hygiene.

And at home, arm yourself as well with Immunia Urinary Health, because as a naturopath, I know that the key to lasting health lies in prevention.
